The Two Colour Kerchief

This is my prototype kerchief plan for my first published pattern. The funny thing is this was an accidental make. I was bored one evening in November and was desperately looking for a project to begin. None of my WIPs would do, even though I have more than a dozen. Hashtag no shame.

What Happened

As I dug through my many tubs of yarn I found two colours of yarn I had forgotten about from many years ago. A teal and mustard. A combo that I had long since wished to use for a Brioche knit pattern. Well, finding these two yarns meant I went for another adventure of finding the original brioche pattern that I had picked up from The Wool Emporium in Saskatoon. Which sadly is to be closing this year for good.

The owner’s pattern is for a wavy scarf. I frogged it several times, back and forth. Finally I deemed myself worthy to knit Brioche and make a pattern as I went….

Weaving the Pattern Together

I knit this way and that way. It was coming together oddly shaped, so I would frog it back and restart and go again, and again, and again. At this point I did not know how to pull out just one row of brioche neatly. I would end up having to begin all over every time.

The pattern did begin to finally come together wonderfully but… well to be frank, something was… wrong. The pattern is knit all on one side and purl all on the other….

How? What? Why?… Shoot…

So here I am with a right side and a wrong side. This is supposed to be Brioche. Brioche is reversible not wrong side and right side… What have I done? I guess I have learned how to knit two colours in an odd fair isle style which is similar to Brioche. Yay me!?

Now I flipped back to the original pattern instructions from The Wool Emporium to see what keywords I was missing… Subtle keywords were missing from my created text and transformed into subtle keywords that made my stitches K1 Col A, K1 Col B.

Positivity

There were ways I could have acted. I could have thrown in the towel! No, I did not though. I thought to myself, “run with it”. Now the prototypes about 6 in total but only 4 kept, I created a master pattern. The pattern, I wrote a basic knit language for the website I have it for sale on as a PDF, because they do not have Brioche language yet. Also, I made several education videos for the knitting techniques used (links down below).

I am proud that an accident lead to something beautiful, fun and a whole learning curve for myself to produce something I didn’t think of. The end product of the pattern which is for sale on Ribblr, So happy to say led to 7 great Christmas gifts and a matching one for myself.

prototypeHappy New Year
